Simple steps for a cleaner, more functional space.
A well-organized closet makes your day easier. We’ve created this checklist to help you reset your space, whether you’re prepping for a redesign or refreshing your current setup.
Step 1: Clear and Sort
Start with one closet to keep the project manageable.
- Remove all items from the space
- Wipe down shelves, rods, floors, and baseboards
- Separate everything into: Keep / Donate / Store / Toss
Step 2: Edit with Intention
Use focused strategies to help let go of what you don’t need.
12-12-12 Challenge
- 12 items to donate
- 12 items to throw away
- 12 items to return to their place
Hanger Trick: Turn all your hangers backward. After 30 days, donate anything that hasn’t been worn.
One-Year Rule: If you haven’t worn it in a year, remove it from your wardrobe.
Step 3: Measure and Plan
Before putting everything back, measure dimensions and note key features that may not be visible when the closet is full:
- Measure height, width, and depth
- Note obstructions like vents, outlets, or angled ceilings
- Photograph the empty space for reference
- Identify unused or underused areas that could fit shelving or storage
- Look up! Check vertical space for utilizing shelving or wardrobe lifts
- Make a list of your storage needs: long hanging, folded clothing, shoes, bags, accessories, laundry, and luggage
Step 4: Refill with Structure
Keep your closet organized based on access, frequency of use, and category.
- Group clothing by category or color
- Place everyday items at eye level
- Use double rods for shorter garments
- Reserve full-height sections for long coats or dresses
- Leave open space for future additions
Step 5: Add Finishing Touches
Enhance the space with simple upgrades that improve function and appearance.
- Install soft lighting or spotlights
- Add a mirror or tray to create a styling zone
- Rotate seasonal clothing
- Keep a donation bin within the closet for easy ongoing decluttering
Step 6: Organize Accessories
Designate clear, accessible spaces for shoes, bags, and accessories.
- Use adjustable shelving for different shoe types
- Store frequently worn shoes at waist or eye level
- Use clear boxes or upper shelves for seasonal pairs
- Add drawer inserts for jewelry, delicate clothing and accessories
- Use shelf dividers to keep handbags upright
- Install pull-out racks for ties and belts
- Include a valet rod for delicate garments or next-day outfits
