A lot of companies use the words “closet” and “wardrobe” interchangeably. But how they’re built and how they function can be very different.
Everyone’s space and home organization needs are different. While one house can benefit from a flexible closet system, others may require the structure of a full wardrobe. We build both, and we’ll help you choose what works best for your layout and lifestyle.

Closet Systems: Open-Back, Flexible, Cost-Effective
Many closets are built using what’s called a shared partition system. That means:
- Vertical panels are installed on site
- Shelves and rods are added between them
- The back of the closet is left open, showing the wall behind it
This is a smart, efficient way to organize a reach-in or walk-in closet. It works well in tight spaces, and it’s more affordable than full cabinet construction.
Typical price range:
- Reach-in closets: Start around $4,000
- Walk-in closets: Range from $5,000 to $30,000+, depending on size, materials, and accessories
At Legacy, we build these systems all the time, especially when the space doesn’t require extra structure.
Wardrobe Systems: Cabinet Construction for Structure and Style
Some projects need more than a closet system. That’s where our cabinet-style wardrobe construction comes in.
These are built as independent cabinet boxes, each with:
- A full back panel
- Locked-in sides, top, and bottom
- Clean finishes on all visible surfaces
We recommend this for projects where:
- You’re removing an existing closet and building something new
- The wardrobe is exposed in the room (not recessed into a closet space)
- You want something that looks and feels like custom furniture
Cabinet construction offers more structure, more durability, and more design options, without the price tag of full custom millwork.
Typical price range:
- A Legacy Wardrobe averages around $12,000
- Most fall between $8,000 and $15,000+, depending on demolition, materials, and accessories
