A quick look at the two most common materials used in custom closets and cabinetry and how to choose the right one.
At Legacy Wardrobes, we get this question all the time: “Is it real wood?”
The short answer? Not exactly. And that’s not a bad thing. Today’s cabinet and closet materials are engineered to be stronger, straighter, and more affordable than solid wood while still delivering the high-end look and performance you expect.
Let’s break down the two most common materials we use: TFL and veneer-core plywood
Option 1: TFL (Thermally Fused Laminate)
TFL is a popular, cost-effective material used in most custom closet systems today.
It’s made from compressed wood particles (aka particle board) covered with a durable laminate layer. That outer layer can be a solid color, texture, or woodgrain, depending on your style.
Pros:
- TFL provides a clean, consistent look
- Comes in a wide range of finishes
- Great value: less expensive than plywood
- Eco-conscious: up to 80% recycled content
- Resists warping and bowing
Things to Know:
- Doesn’t hold traditional screws as well
- Requires special equipment to fabricate cleanly
(We use high-grade fasteners like Cabineo to ensure durability.)
Option 2: Veneer-Core Plywood
This is what many people think of as “real wood.” It’s a stack of thin wood layers (plies) with a wood veneer on top. It’s commonly used in high-end kitchens and built-ins.
Pros:
- Veneer-Core Plywood is strong, rigid, and holds screws
- Can be cut with simple tools
- Great for projects that need extra strength or traditional woodworking touches
Things to Know:
- Veneer-Core Plywood is heavier and more expensive
- Prone to visible grain inconsistencies
- Not always needed for interior closet applications
What We Use at Legacy Wardrobes
For most wardrobe and closet projects, we use TFL—because it’s:
- More stable over time
- Easier to clean
- Budget-friendly without sacrificing appearance
We match it with precision fabrication and specialty hardware to give you a clean, cabinet-grade finish that lasts.
And if you’re building a premium project (like a kitchen, mudroom, or entertainment wall), we can integrate veneer-core plywood where needed, based on design, layout, or finish choice.
